This set of five vintage lidded beehives is made from cork oak (Quercus suber), which are native to the Mediterranean region, including the coasts of France. These beehives are crafted from the naturally curved stripped bark, the shape left by the tree forms a hollow, making it ideal for beehives. The lids are fixed with nails and they are open underneath. Cork oak trees thrive in sunny, low rainfall, and high humidity conditions typical of the Mediterranean.
The cork is harvested every 8 to 14 years without harming the tree, as it regenerates its bark. This sustainable practice ensures the durability and insulating properties of the material. They can be used as decorative elements in gardens, patios, or interiors, and repurposed creatively for planters, or unique stools. The variations in size and shape reflect the natural growth patterns of the cork trees, adding to their unique charm and authenticity. Circa 1970s.
