Collection of Antique Silver Plated Sugar Serving Spoons

Seven pieces of silver plate, gathered one by one at brocantes in Paris over the course of decades — this is the sugar service that Patricia and Walter Wells assembled for their Paris apartment. The group includes two serving spoons — one with a beautifully pierced shell-form bowl and a handle engraved with fine scrollwork, the other a plain oval bowl with a clean, unfussy handle — alongside a deep-bowled ladle, a slender condiment spoon with an ornate rococo handle, a pair of spring-action sugar tongs, a sugar nip or cube lifter with a twisted stem and funnel-shaped cup, and a small scissor-action implement likely used for breaking loaf sugar. Each piece is different in style and period, yet they read as a coherent set — the warm, slightly muted silver plate patina tying them together as much as their shared purpose. Patricia grouped these pieces herself because this is how she and Walter used them — brought out for coffee or afternoon tea. Displayed together in a shallow dish or on a small tray, they make an understated and genuinely useful arrangement for any table where sugar still arrives in a bowl rather than a paper packet.
