This decorative assembled set of four reclaimed glass staircase finials, likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1880–1920, brings together four distinct forms in clear, blue and deep ruby glass, each mounted on an aged brass base. One is a rounded clear globe with an all-over faceted surface, another is a taller clear-gray example cut into a more angular, jewel-like form, while the third is a vivid turquoise-blue sphere with deep geometric facets. The fourth is particularly distinctive, with a rich ruby-red spherical body encircled by clear horizontal bands. The taller clear-gray finial is noticeably heavier and may be crystal rather than ordinary glass, although this cannot be confirmed with certainty.

Plaster was added inside the bases after the finials were removed from their original posts, likely to stabilize them and allow them to stand securely on their own.

Originally made to crown staircase newel posts, these decorative terminals are known in France as boules d’escalier. Glass and crystal examples became particularly popular during the 19th century, when their faceted and colored surfaces were prized for the way they caught the light and added a refined finishing detail to a staircase. The four finials remain in good decorative condition overall, with light scratches, small surface marks and wear consistent with age and previous architectural use. The heavier clear-gray example has a visible chip to one of its facets.

Removed from their original architectural setting, they now make wonderfully individual decorative objects. Displayed together on a console, bookshelf or mantel, the differing heights, colors and cuts catch and reflect the light in different ways, creating a lively, jewel-like arrangement with a strong collected character.
