A late 19th century large oil on canvas portrait of a naval officer, signed Pellicciotti and presented in its richly ornamented giltwood and gesso frame. The artist has left a generous field of soft sea green behind the sitter, allowing the officer’s features to stand out crisply against the luminous ground. The officer is shown in formal dress uniform with three sleeve stripes indicating the rank of lieutenant commander, his dark coat accented with gilt buttons, chevrons, and star insignia. The brushwork is smooth and controlled, and the face is rendered with a slightly stylized clarity that conveys dignity and rank rather than strict naturalism. The expansive, simplified background lends the portrait a surprisingly modern visual presence, giving the composition a graphic clarity that feels ahead of its time. The opulent carved frame further reinforces this impression of authority and presence. The canvas remains in good condition with gentle age marks and toning, while the frame shows light rubbing to the gilding, scattered gesso losses, and age cracks that contribute to its authentic period character. This commanding work lends gravitas to an entry, library, or gentleman’s study. It layers beautifully with other gilt frames, painted walls, and worn leather, or can anchor a coastal interior above a console, bringing a sense of history, character, and quiet authority to the space.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
