An impressive, tall French giltwood mirror from the Napoleon III period, late 19th century, with an arched profile and rounded shoulders set within a deep, stepped cushion frame with a recent matte black finish. The richly modeled crest depicts two putti flanking a basket of flowers amid scrolling foliage and acanthus, lending the piece both romantic and neoclassical resonance. The original glass shows a poetic surface with scattered foxing and areas of silvering loss that enhance the atmospheric reflection prized in antique mirrors.
With its grand scale and presence, this mirror makes a commanding decorative focal point whether placed above a mantel, console, or in an entryway. Large examples of this type were produced in Paris and provincial workshops to bring light, depth, and grandeur to salons and reception rooms. This tall mirror makes a bold focal point in an entry, dining room, or bedroom, whether mounted above a console or displayed as a pier glass. The dark frame grounds a space with graphic strength, while the aged plate tempers glare and adds depth to the reflection. Pair with candlelight or gilt accents to heighten its dramatic decorative effect. The plate will be secured with a replacement back for stability and preservation.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
