A commanding still life in oil on wood, this harvest composition is signed by Luigi Zago (1894–1952). Warm tones of ochre, pumpkin, and moss green are arranged against a deep, shadowed ground, animated by the presence of rustic squashes alongside an earthenware jug, a large glass demijohn, and a small book set at the edge of the table. The painting is presented in a handsome Charles X giltwood frame finished in gold leaf, its refined surface offering a striking contrast to the humble subject matter. The condition is good, with gentle surface wear to the paint and timeworn rubbing to the gilding, consistent with age.
Luigi Zago (1894–1952), an Italian painter who exhibited widely in Italy before relocating to South America later in life. Zago was known for landscape and still-life work and participated in major national exhibitions including the Venice Biennale and Quadriennale of Rome, and his paintings are held in public and private collections in Europe and South America.
With its generous scale and warm, earthy palette, this painting brings depth and presence to a dining room or kitchen. Hang it above a marble console or farmhouse table, and pair it with terracotta, stoneware, and linen for a collected, rustic look. Its substantial composition and flashes of orange lend character, while remaining versatile across a range of décors.
