This expressive anthropomorphic pitcher by French ceramicist Julie Désert Armanville blurs the line between functional pottery and sculpture. Hand-built in stoneware, the vessel takes the form of a stylised human head rendered with playfulness and wit: a tall, slender cylindrical silhouette animated by large round eyes, and prominent, angular facial features modelled in warm buff clay. A striking coiffure of deep green glaze forms the asymmetrical rim, its surface richly textured with incised spiral motifs suggesting curls. The gracefully curved handle emerges naturally from the back of the head. Variations in the glaze, subtle speckling, and the visible marks of the hand contribute to its tactile, artisanal character. The base is stamped JDA. It is in very good condition, with only minor glaze irregularities inherent to the making process.

Julie Desert Armanville’s stoneware sculptures are rooted in the postwar ceramic tradition of Vallauris, where playful figuration and modernist experimentation flourished under the influence of artists such as Pablo Picasso and Roger Capron. As a member of Capron’s atelier from 1972 to 1982, she developed a distinctive visual language characterized by simplified forms, expressive textures, and earthy glazes that celebrate the materiality of stoneware. This work exemplifies her approach: a stylized head reduced to its essential geometric volumes, balancing whimsy and character with the disciplined craftsmanship and tactile richness that define her oeuvre.
