Contemporary Oil Painting of a Striding Buff Hen by Karibou - 17¼" x 20½"

This small contemporary oil painting by Karibou depicts a buff-colored hen striding across a softly painted ground, its body filling much of the composition. The plumage is built up in warm ochre, cream and pale golden tones, worked with loose, feathery brushstrokes that give the bird a soft, almost tactile presence. The vivid red comb and wattle bring a lively contrast to the otherwise muted palette, while the cool blue-gray background keeps the composition light and atmospheric. The canvas is signed Karibou in the lower right corner and presented in a simple warm-toned wooden box frame, which gives the painting a clean, understated finish.

There is a gentle humor in the hen’s purposeful stride, as though she has somewhere to be. Caught mid-step, she feels full of character and intent, and the small, sharply observed eye gives her an almost quizzical alertness. Her scale within the composition lends the ordinary farmyard subject an unexpected presence, while Karibou’s treatment finds poetry in the familiar, balancing humor with a soft, painterly quality.

The painting would bring warmth and a playful rural note to a kitchen, breakfast room or country interior, while its storybook character would also make it especially appealing in a child’s bedroom.
