Contemporary Painting by Michèle Alcaraz - Provençal Vessels - 36½" x 26"

This contemporary still life by Michèle Alcaraz, a deeply rooted Provençal painter trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Aix-en-Provence and Marseille-Luminy, is executed in oil directly onto coarse burlap. Born and raised in the South of France and working from her studio in Cabriès, she began painting at the age of twelve under the guidance of Joseph Stamboulian. Exhibiting throughout Provence since 2008, including at the Musée Edgar Melik in Cabriès, Alcaraz has developed a recognisable body of work centred on the humble utilitarian objects of rural Provence.

Here, robust jars and rounded forms, reminiscent of clay or stone garden ornaments, are distilled into strong, simplified volumes, rendered in deep oxblood, umber, cream, and charcoal against passages of exposed tawny jute. Confident palette-knife strokes create sculptural ridges that catch the light and lend the composition a grounded, almost architectural presence. Painted directly on burlap, a material associated with agricultural sacks, Alcaraz unites subject and surface in a quiet homage to rural craft traditions. The reverse is inscribed “Isle-sur-la-Sorgue,” numbered 6, and dated 2026, which may indicate either the place and year of creation or an exhibition reference.

The earthenware forms evoke traditional Provençal pottery, and the overall effect is both intimate and powerfully grounded. This work carries the warmth and timeless spirit of Provence into the home.
