This contemporary still life by Michèle Alcaraz (b. 1957) is rendered in oil on canvas. Deeply rooted in Provence, the artist trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Aix-en-Provence and at Marseille–Luminy, grounding her work in the rich artistic traditions of the South of France. Still working from her studio in Cabriès, she began painting at the age of twelve under the guidance of Joseph Stamboulian. Exhibiting throughout Provence since 2008, including at the Musée Edgar Melik in Cabriès, Alcaraz has developed a distinctive body of work centred on the humble utilitarian objects of rural Provence.
Here, three generously rounded Provençal jars are distilled into simplified, powerful forms. The palette is sunlit and mineral, layered in tones of limestone, sand, olive, ochre, and soft charcoal. Applied with confident palette-knife strokes, the paint builds a richly textured surface that catches the light, giving the vessels a grounded, tactile presence. Broad passages of creamy white recall sun-washed lime plaster, while deeper shadows evoke the cool hush of a stone kitchen or the dappled shade of a Provençal garden. Rooted in the everyday poetry of rural life, the earthenware forms carry a quiet strength.
The composition feels calm yet assured, bringing warmth and the enduring spirit of Provence into an interior. Its luminous palette and textured surface soften contemporary spaces while sitting naturally among terracotta, linen, aged wood, and patinated metal in more traditional settings.
