Dazzling Régence Gilt Mirror w/ Parcloses, Early 18th Century - 39½" x 21¼"

A dazzling French Régence mirror dating from the early 18th century, richly carved and brilliantly gilded. The frame is crowned by a spectacular openwork crest featuring an overflowing basket of flowers beneath a dramatic acanthus plume, all surrounded by scrolling foliage, trellis motifs, and shell-carved corners. A beveled central mirror plate is framed by inset mirror panels that catch and reflect the light, enhancing the richness of the gilded surround. The exuberant carving, luminous gilding, and interplay of mirrored surfaces create a striking sense of opulence and movement. Traces of red bole visible beneath the gilding add warmth and depth to the decorative surface.

The central plate and some of the surrounding mirror panels appear to be later replacements, reflecting the mirror's long history of use. The frame displays a beautifully timeworn surface with expected wear, including some gesso losses and age-related cracks. The crest has been repaired in the past and should be handled with appropriate care. The mirror plates show attractive foxing and surface wear, contributing to the mirror's antique character while retaining a usable reflection. 

Despite its relatively modest dimensions, this mirror has remarkable decorative presence. The luminous gilding catches and reflects light beautifully, while the intricate carving brings richness, texture, and elegance to a wall. Equally at home in an entryway, dressing room, powder room, or above a mantel, it offers the opulence and refinement of early 18th-century French decoration in a versatile format.
