Playful and very decorative, this signed Spanish ceramic figure reflects the bold graphic style and folkloric inspiration characteristic of the work of Domingo Punter (b.1936), one of the best known ceramicists associated with the historic pottery tradition of Teruel, in Aragón, Spain. Descending from a long family lineage of potters active in Teruel since at least 1910, Domingo Punter became renowned for reviving the aesthetic vocabulary of medieval Spanish ceramics through richly hand painted decorative forms. Today, the manufacture Cerámica Domingo Punter e Hijos still exists in Teruel, where the family continues this historic ceramic tradition.
The stylized human form is richly decorated with geometric and curvilinear motifs in green, black, and cream tones, a palette particularly characteristic of the historic ceramic tradition of Teruel, which the Punter family helped preserve and revive. Certain motifs evoke symbolic forms associated with Spanish folk culture, while the overall composition draws inspiration from the Moorish artistic heritage that profoundly influenced Spanish decorative arts.
The piece remains in good overall condition, with a finely crackled glaze consistent with age and careful use. The spout has been professionally restored and a small associated chip remains visible, consistent with the age and history of the object.
Charming, unusual, and full of character, this decorative ceramic would bring a touch of Mediterranean warmth and vintage artistic flair to a kitchen shelf, covered terrace or curated ceramic collection.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
