Delicate 18th Century Italian Devotional Figure of the Virgin - 30"

An 18th-century devotional figure of the Virgin from southern Italy, with the head and hands modeled in painted ceramic and the body constructed in wood, dressed in period textiles. The serene figure stands gracefully on her original carved and softly glowing giltwood Rococo base bearing an incised inscription. Her delicately painted face and hands convey a gentle expression, animated by glass eyes that lend the gaze a lifelike softness, and a simple necklace adorns her neck. Beneath the hem of the gown, small painted sandals are visible, a charming detail that reflects the care devoted to every aspect of the figure. 

She is dressed in her original flowing gown of pale blue silk brocade woven with delicate floral motifs, gathered at the waist with a lace belt and finished with lace cuffs. A crown of red silk flowers adorns her head, likely a later addition, providing a lively contrast to the soft tones of the garment. The figure remains in good antique condition with gentle signs of age and devotional use. The ceramic surfaces show light craquelure and tiny scattered losses. The textiles show light fraying, toning, and age related imperfections, all consistent with age. 

Figures of this type were created for private devotion in southern Italian homes and small chapels during the 18th century. Artisans often combined sculpted ceramic figures with real textile garments to give the image a lifelike presence while allowing the clothing to be replaced or embellished over time.
