The delicately gilt wax figure stands on a stepped base and is surrounded by tiny white blossoms and green foliage fashioned in wax, fabric and paper, with delicate sparkling particles highlighting the dark, grotto-like ground. The shallow shadow box retains its giltwood frame, and the sides remain covered with the original small-scale floral textile, a rare survival that greatly enhances its charm and historical interest.

Such devotional dioramas belong to the long Catholic tradition of private devotion, in which households and small chapels kept intimate images as petitions or expressions of gratitude. Often made in convent workshops by religious sisters, these compositions combined monastic craftsmanship in wax modeling, gilt paper trimming, moss, and silk fragments to create a miniature altar within a shadowbox.
