Elegant and petite, this late 19th-century French brass counter or reception bell features a domed bell surmounted by a bud finial, a slender turned stem, and a circular foot cast with crisp ivy leaves in relief. It rings via a curved side lever that produces a clear, loud, and sustained tone. The surface shows a warm honey-brown patina with areas of verdigris in the recesses and scattered marks from use; there is a small split at the collar above the base.
Reception bells of this type were standard in hotels, shops, and well-run households, used to summon staff or signal service. The naturalistic ivy motif and bud finial reflect the late Victorian taste moving toward early Art Nouveau, when French brass foundries favored botanical ornament and softly rounded forms. Side-lever mechanisms were prized for their crisp action and bright carry, and the durable cast brass construction speaks to the practical quality of period desk furnishings.
Set on a writing desk, library table, or entry console, this bell adds a tactile note of ceremony and charm. It makes a witty accent on a kitchen island to call the family to dinner or on a bar to cue a toast, while its mellow patina layers beautifully alongside leather, cut crystal, and polished wood. In a boutique or home office it serves as a functional conversation piece that anchors a vignette with authentic period character.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
