A wall-mounted cutlery drainer in glazed terracotta with a semicircular backplate, dating to the early 20th century and likely from southwestern France. Handcrafted with two conjoined cylindrical pots pierced for drainage, it features a beautifully fluid drip glaze in tones of honey amber and bottle green with darker streaks. In good condition with small rim chips and light glaze fritting that add to its rustic authenticity and charm.
Once a familiar feature in country kitchens, it would have hung beside the stone sink to dry knives and spoons. The simple form, pierced sides, and flowing glaze reflect the artistry and practicality of rural pottery workshops that created functional yet expressive pieces for everyday use.
Today, it brings warmth and utility to a kitchen, pantry, or scullery, ready to hold flatware, wooden spoons, or brushes above the sink. In a mudroom it works as a wall caddy for garden tools and twine, while in a breakfast room it can serve as a rustic wall vase for dried herbs or flowers; add a liner if using fresh stems. The compact scale and mellow glaze introduce authentic French country texture to both traditional and contemporary spaces.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
