A large oil on canvas depicting a dramatic bullfighting scene in Valencia, signed Vidal and dated 1892. Captured at the height of the action, the composition shows a charging bull vaulting over the barrier as a startled matador scrambles to safety. Beyond, a densely packed crowd fills the arena, lending the scene energy, movement, and theatrical tension.
Remarkably modern in its conception for the late 19th century, the artist adopts an elevated viewpoint and bold cropping that draw the viewer directly into the action. The sweeping curve of the arena, the dynamic silhouette of the bull, and the lively treatment of the spectators create a vivid sense of immediacy and drama.
Signed and dated lower left, with an inscription identifying the fighting bull depicted and recording the location and date as Valencia, 24 July 1892. The bull is noted as being from the celebrated Ibarra breeding ranch. Presented in its original wooden frame, which complements the painting's palette particularly well. The work displays age-related craquelure and minor surface wear consistent with its age.
Both a compelling historical record and a highly decorative work, this painting captures the drama, energy, and spectacle of the Spanish arena with remarkable immediacy. Its unusually modern composition draws the viewer directly into the action, while the scale and movement of the scene give it a strong visual presence. Equally suited to a library, study, entrance hall, or living room, it serves as a captivating focal point, rich in atmosphere, history, and storytelling.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
