This small French polychrome trumeau mirror, dating from the early 19th century, has a neoclassical design with a rectangular mirror plate flanked by two twisted columns. The upper section features a charcoal-painted panel decorated with raised floral scrollwork, rosettes and palmettes, beneath a simple projecting cornice. The painted wood has developed a beautifully worn surface, with faded cream on the columns, muted green on the surrounding frame and warm reddish-brown tones showing through the distressed paint. There is a small loss to the decorative frieze above the mirror, along with rubbing, chips and paint losses consistent with age. The mirror plate is heavily foxed and desilvered, with scattered dark spots and a broad mottled area through the center, giving it a distinctly atmospheric appearance.
The faded polychromy, classical decoration and heavily aged glass give this trumeau plenty of character. Its modest proportions make it particularly charming above a small fireplace, or above an entry console. With its heavily patinated glass, the mirror is best appreciated for its decorative qualities rather than practical reflection.
