This unusual early 19th-century mirror from Piedmont, northern Italy, is carved from wood and finished in a richly layered palette of warm cream, deep burgundy-red and gilded highlights. A round mirror plate sits within a molded inner frame, flanked by slender pilaster-like supports and delicate trailing floral ornament. Above, the architectural crest is centered by a small gilded eagle with outstretched wings, a familiar neoclassical and Empire motif, complemented by draped swags and floral carving. The original painted and gilded surfaces show rubbing, small losses, exposed wood and a few age-related cracks, which are not structurally concerning provided the piece is handled with care. The wood is also very slightly warped along the lower edge, without affecting the mirror's decorative appeal. The glass shows some foxing and localized desilvering but remains relatively clear and functional. Together, these signs of age give the piece a beautifully layered, timeworn character.
The round mirror plate, elaborate crest and contrasting polychromy lend the piece a somewhat theatrical quality, with an expressive character that feels distinctly Italian. It would sit naturally among collected objects in a richly layered, somewhat dramatic interior, while its distinctive silhouette and palette could provide an appealing contrast in a more contemporary setting.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
