A grand early 19th-century Italian center table, crowned with a richly figured sea-green marble top set within a molded edge. The carved wooden base is lavishly articulated with shells and scrolling foliage across the apron, trellis panels, and expressive grotesque masks at the knees, all resting on sinuous legs. Traces of original gilding and polychromy remain, forming a beautifully timeworn surface that enhances the depth and movement of the marble. The gilding retains a deep, time-softened patina, while the marble shows light, age-appropriate wear, including a stable, earlier restoration.
Evoking the interiors of a palazzo, this table reflects the enduring Baroque and Rococo sensibility in Italy, where richly colored marble surfaces were set against exuberantly carved forms inspired by Renaissance ornament.
The combination of verdant marble and expressive carving gives this table a richness that feels both indulgent and considered. The stone brings coolness and depth, the ornament brings life, and together they create a piece that quietly commands attention, whether anchoring an entry hall, adding depth to a library, or serving as a console behind a sofa. It is equally at ease in layered, traditional interiors or in pared-back spaces where a single statement carries the room.
