This Betschdorf Alsatian stoneware storage jar features a soft gray salt-glazed surface highlighted with hand-painted cobalt blue. The rounded body rises to a thick rolled rim above twin handles accented with blue brushstrokes, while a freehand cobalt foliate spray framed by a loosely painted scalloped band ornaments the belly between simple blue rules at the rim and base. Made in Betschdorf, Alsace, around the late 19th to early 20th century, it is unstamped by a maker but marked with its capacity of 10 liters and remains in good condition with small glaze nicks and light surface wear.
Antique Betschdorf stoneware, distinguished by its soft gray body, cobalt blue decoration, and lustrous salt glaze, reflects a tradition that dates back to the 16th century. The salt-glazing technique, fired at around 1,300 °C, was introduced by a German potter from the Westerwald region, whose influence shaped the enduring style of Alsatian ceramics. By 1865, Betschdorf’s thriving pottery trade counted some 60 workshops employing nearly 400 people, a testament to the widespread success and popularity of these distinctive ceramics. Renowned for their durability, elegant cobalt decoration, and practical forms, Betschdorf wares were sought after well beyond Alsace, exported throughout France and neighboring countrie.
Designed for everyday utility, these vessels stored sauerkraut, pickles, goose fat, and apothecary goods. Today, such pots bring authentic country charm to a kitchen or dining space, ideal as a utensil holder, vase, or rustic accent paired with pewter, ironstone, or wooden boards. When grouped together, these vessels create a more impactful display, their varying sizes and subtle differences in cobalt decoration enhancing the rhythm, depth, and authentic charm of a rustic setting.
