A tranquil early 20th century view of the Ardèche , this oil on canvas captures cypress, stone farmhouses, and layered hills in soft greens, ochre, and slate blue. The work is signed at the lower right by Antoni Vila Arrufat and noted again on the reverse, and it is presented in a stepped giltwood frame with a timeworn surface that suits the scene. Arrufat, a Catalan painter active in the first half of the century, is admired for lyrical landscapes that balance structure and atmosphere; he returned often to the Ardèche , drawn to its clear southern light, sculptural topography, and quiet rural architecture, all of which lent themselves to his meditative style. Condition is good with a light network of age craquelure and a few tiny paint losses.
This painting lends gentle depth to a room, its muted palette harmonizing with natural linens, warm woods, and stone. Hang it above a console, fireplace, or writing desk, or lean it on a mantel and layer it with smaller drawings for a collected look. The serene composition works beautifully in both classic and modern rooms, offering a quiet sense of escape and a warm, Mediterranean touch.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
