Tall and spare, this early 20th-century French rack in fir features two half-rounded stiles joined by a series of hand-shaped, irregular, round rungs, creating a striking, ladder-like silhouette. The wood displays a warm honey-to-tawny tone with visible grain, tool marks, and gentle undulation to the bars, hallmarks of vernacular carpentry. It stands in rustic condition with a beautiful dry patina enriched by time, showing scattered nicks, light abrasions, and some old wormholes, yet remains sturdy and complete.
Such racks were fixtures in rural barns and stables, where their open slats allowed hay or fodder to be stored off the ground and to aerate. Fir was a practical choice in many regions of France, valued for its ready availability and workability. The honest, utilitarian design reflects farmhouse traditions at the turn of the century, yielding objects of quiet sculptural presence that today stand as compelling examples of vernacular design.
Leaning casually against a wall, it serves as a charming display for quilts, blankets, and linens. Mounted vertically or horizontally, it becomes a sculptural accent that enhances farmhouse-style interiors. In a bathroom or spa room, it offers a tactile way to hang towels, while in a mudroom it neatly gathers scarves, hats, or bags with the addition of ties or simple hooks.
