Early 20th-century French round painted metal tray inspired by Napoleon III designs and the era's taste for Japanese lacquers, which brought depth and a touch of drama to interior décor. Made of painted sheet iron with a shallow raised rim, the tray features a deep black ground decorated with a hand-painted bouquet of hydrangea-like blossoms in soft pink and mauve tones with sage-green leaves, bordered by a slender bronze-toned band.
The surface retains the mellow sheen of aged varnish and subtle traces of handwork, while light scuffs and gentle wear contribute to the rich patina developed over time. Its dark ground, abundant floral bouquet, and metallic border echo the decorative taste of the Napoleon III period, when lacquer-like finishes and lush botanical painting were favored for elegant serving pieces.
Equally suited to a charming country house or a sophisticated city apartment, this tray sits beautifully on an ottoman or side table to gather glassware, or on a kitchen island or open shelving for display, bringing a quiet decorative accent to a kitchen, dining room, or garden room. The deep black ground draws the eye, while the painted flowers add a soft, nostalgic note of color.
