An elongated overdoor oil on canvas from the early 20th century, depicting Apollo with the Nine Muses in a continuous frieze, set within a simple slim stained wooden frame. The figures advance in a lively dance across a warm ochre ground, their classical draperies flowing in teal, emerald, saffron, and rose, accented by laurel wreaths, ribbons, and sandals. The ensemble is strikingly colorful, and the very fine, light brushstrokes lend delicacy to the dynamic composition. A scrolling ribbon unfurls along the lower edge, carrying the names of the Muses in Greek, while French translations are noted on the reverse. In a telling detail, the scribe confused the gods, inscribing “Cupido” where Apollon should appear.

The surface presents a few scratches and gentle age coloration consistent with age.

Overdoors of this type were favored for salons, libraries, and music rooms, drawing on classical themes that signaled learning and taste. The frieze-like arrangement and idealized figures reflect High Renaissance models and the academic classicism, here expressly inspired by Baldassare Peruzzi’s celebrated 16th-century treatment of Apollo and the Muses.
