A petite early 20th-century mirror in gessoed and gilt wood, its rectangular frame modeled with trailing blossoms and leaves in soft relief. The gilt surface has been refreshed in places and now presents a gentle, mellowed tone that harmonizes with the timeworn character of the mirror plate. The glass shows scattered foxing and features a bevel along a single edge, indicating that the pane was salvaged from a larger mirror, a common and resourceful practice that adds to its layered history. Dating to the early 1900s, the frame reflects the period’s fondness for naturalistic ornament and gently flowing lines. Some losses and wear to the frame contribute to its authentic antique charm rather than detracting from its decorative appeal.
Intimate in scale, it layers beautifully on a mantel, in a gallery wall, or propped on a console to catch candlelight. In a powder room or dressing nook, it brings a soft, romantic glow. Beautifully imperfect, it makes a charming accent from bedside to entry.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
