A charming French advertising match striker for St Raphaël Quinquina, early 20th century. The piece comprises a flared circular base in pale blue-grey glaze with deep cobalt transfer lettering and simple rosette motifs, surmounted by a conical, finely ribbed biscuit striker with a glazed rim and interior well for matches. The contrast between the glossy base and the matte, tactile striker is deliberate for function and display.
Match strikers of this type were a familiar sight on bar and café counters from the late 19th century through the 1920s, commissioned by distilleries and breweries as everyday publicité. They typically combined a porcelain or faïence base with transfer lettering and an unglazed biscuit surface to create friction for lighting matches, a practical touch in the era before table lighters.
St Raphaël Quinquina is a French aromatised wine based on quinine-infused wine, first developed in the 1830s and named for the archangel associated with healing. The brand became a staple apéritif in France, marketed in Rouge and Blanc expressions and promoted through striking interwar poster campaigns, notably by Charles Loupot, which cemented its graphic identity across cafés and bistros.
On a bar cart or cocktail cabinet, it introduces authentic bistro character while neatly corralling matches for candles or a hearth. It sits well on a kitchen shelf alongside café au lait bowls and verre bistro, or on a desk as a small catchall. Its restrained palette and compact scale make it an easy accent for traditional, country French, or contemporary interiors seeking a touch of Belle Époque esprit.
