This charming handcrafted terracotta basket from the 1920s showcases a timeless elegance that captures the classic elegance of French garden décor . With its gently curved handle and soft, rounded body, it exudes a pastoral charm, further enhanced by its original patina. The subtle interplay of earthy tones and touches of verdigris green adds depth and character, bringing a touch of French countryside allure to any space.
It is stamped underneath by a potter from Albi. In the early 20th century, Albi, a town in southern France's Tarn region, was known for producing practical terracotta pottery rooted in centuries-old local traditions. Potters used the region’s red clay to create everyday items like jugs and storage pots, often wheel-thrown and sometimes glazed inside to hold liquids. These wares were typically rustic and unadorned, reflecting the needs of rural life rather than decorative trends.

Unlike more decorative pottery centers like Vallauris or Moustiers, Albi’s ceramics remained utilitarian and modest in style. Though many workshops declined with the rise of industrial production, Albi pottery is now valued for its simplicity, regional character, and connection to traditional French craftsmanship.
