This Italian carved walnut center table, dating from the early 20th century, has a long rectangular top above a richly carved apron of scrolling foliage, shells and floral motifst hat continues around the entire table. The table stands on four turned and carved legs with tapering faceted sections, joined by a shaped stretcher that meets at the center beneath a small finial.
The walnut has been recently stripped back, revealing a pale, softly weathered surface with traces of the older finish remaining in the recesses of the carving, bringing greater clarity to the carved lines and emphasizing the depth of the ornament. The table shows attractive signs of age and long use, including light surface scratches, gentle wear and scattered old wormholes, which sit beautifully with the stripped finish.
Its well-balanced proportions make it particularly versatile. Carved on all sides, it would make an ideal entry table placed at the center of a hall, but it could just as easily be pushed against a wall or behind a sofa and used as a console. Its size would also accommodate six diners comfortably, although the relatively low apron means lower-profile chairs would work best to preserve good leg clearance.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
