This early 20th-century oil-on-canvas still life brings together an artist’s paint-covered palette and everyday objects arranged on a simple wooden table: an earthenware jug, a candle in its holder, a dark glass bottle, a drinking glass, a crusty loaf of bread and a fish resting on a shallow plate. Painted largely with a palette knife, the composition has a rich texture, particularly visible in the thick deposits of color across the artist’s palette and the expressive treatment of the bread and pottery. The dark tones of olive green, warm brown and charcoal are enlivened by touches of rust-red, ochre and blue, with colors echoed from one element to another to create a harmonious composition. Signed R. Chambon in the lower left, the painting is presented unframed, adding to its rustic, unpretentious character. Overall condition is good, with slight looseness to the canvas, minor surface wear and small areas of paint loss, particularly around the edges, consistent with its age.
The dense composition, earthy colors and heavily worked surface give this still life a strong, slightly moody presence. The bread, fish and pottery give the scene the rustic character of a country kitchen. It would work particularly well leaning against a kitchen wall, left unframed for a raw, relaxed appeal.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
