This charming little Savoie pitcher dates from the early 20th century and has a traditional polka dots design that feels surprisingly modern. Its simple, sturdy handmade shape is typical of traditional pottery from the region, with a cylindrical body, rounded handle and small pinched pouring spout. The creamy ivory glaze is decorated with two rows of hand applied brick-red polka dots, whose slightly irregular shapes add to its playful appeal. Light in the hand, the pitcher shows gentle wear from use, with a few chips around the base and more noticeable losses at the spout. These small imperfections are part of its charm and tell of a piece that has been well used and enjoyed.
There is something particularly appealing about the simplicity of this little pitcher. The cheerful red dots against the soft ivory background give it a graphic, almost contemporary quality that contrasts beautifully with its timeworn finish. It would look lovely on a kitchen shelf among old French pottery, holding wooden spoons or a small bunch of dried flowers, or on a breakfast table filled with fresh flowers using a watertight insert. Its modest size and cheerful decoration make it easy to incorporate into a variety of interiors.
