This early 20th-century Savoyard bowl is crafted in glazed terracotta and distinguished by its gently scalloped rim. The generous circular form is coated in a warm straw-yellow glaze, its glossy surface subtly speckled. The rim is edged in a dark manganese brown, emphasizing the undulating contour and lending a decorative contrast to the otherwise simple body. The bowl shows scattered glaze losses along the edge and light surface wear, consistent with age and use, yet remains full of rustic charm.
Bowls of this type were staples of regional households, used for mixing, serving, or presenting salads and other dishes at the table. The scalloped edge reflects a regional preference for adding decorative detail to utilitarian forms, a hallmark of the vernacular pottery tradition in Savoie. Produced in local workshops, these bowls combined durability with modest ornament, enlivening everyday dining with touches of color and craftsmanship while remaining practical for kitchen and table use.
Today, this Savoyard bowl brings both character and authenticity to interiors. It can be displayed on open shelving in a farmhouse kitchen, used as a serving vessel for fruit or salad, or placed as a centerpiece on a dining or console table. Its warm glaze and scalloped rim introduce texture and a soft decorative note, making it equally appealing in rustic, country, or contemporary settings that embrace artisanal details.
