This oil on canvas still life by Luc de Decker (Belgian, 1907–1982), signed at the lower right, presents a magnificent and striking bouquet of anemones, irises, and daffodils, gathered in a clear glass vase and set upon a wooden tabletop. The vivid floral display is accompanied by simple blue-and-white faience pottery, their restrained decoration forming a quiet contrast to the vibrancy of the blossoms. The palette shifts from vermilion and saffron to violet, cobalt, and chalk white, all arranged against a soft taupe ground and brought to life with lively, painterly strokes. The painting is unframed, and time has gently softened the contrasts and relaxed the canvas, enhancing its nostalgic charm.
The choice of flowers enriches the work with symbolic resonance. Anemones, often associated with anticipation and fleeting beauty, pair with irises, symbols of hope and wisdom, while daffodils evoke renewal and the return of spring. Together they form a dazzling celebration of color and life, captured with De Decker’s assured brush.
Its generous scale allows this still life to serve as a focal artwork, the flamboyant bouquet commanding attention while the quiet ground enables it to harmonize easily with antique oak, painted Gustavian finishes, or rustic terra-cotta floors. It is equally striking in a dining room, garden room, or kitchen, where its floral energy and faience accents evoke warmth and refinement.
