Early–Mid 20th-Century Provençal Boxwood Bead Door Curtain - 78¾" x 33"

This Provençal door curtain dates from the early to mid-20th century and is made from numerous strands of turned boxwood beads suspended from a simple wooden top rail. The beads have the distinctive chapelet, or rosary-like, form, a more unusual and sought-after variation on traditional wooden bead curtains. Their pale, naturally mellowed surface gives the curtain a warm, softly aged appearance, while the dense vertical strands create a light but effective screen. The top rail is pierced so it can be fixed directly with screws or hung from hooks. Its relatively narrow width makes it particularly suited to a smaller doorway.

Beaded door curtains were a familiar feature of Provençal houses, especially in summer, allowing air to circulate through an open doorway while helping to reduce direct heat and discourage insects from entering. Boxwood was well suited to the purpose because of its hardness and fine grain, which allowed the small beads to be turned cleanly and withstand repeated movement.
