This green glass demijohn rests in its original woven wicker basket and dates from the early to mid twentieth century, an object shaped by long use and traditional craft. While the form itself has ancient origins linked to early glassmaking in the Persian city of Damghan, it became widely used in Europe from the seventeenth century onward, particularly by wine growers for fermentation and storage. The thick green glass protected its contents from light, while the wicker basket offered strength and insulation. The wicker now shows a richly developed patina, with areas of rubbing, gentle grazing, and darkened staining from handling and age, all of which add depth and character without compromising its structure.
Today, the demijohn is valued as much for its visual presence as for its history. It works beautifully as a floor piece, either alone or grouped with other demijohns for a layered, collected look. It can be repurposed as a vase for dried branches, adapted into a lamp, or styled simply as a sculptural object. The softened wicker, subtle green glass, and visible traces of time bring warmth and authenticity to rustic, bohemian, or vintage inspired interiors, lending a sense of lived in beauty and quiet charm.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
