This early twentieth century notary cabinet is a striking example of functional craftsmanship, designed originally to store paper index cards and legal records. Made from solid wood with a warm, time softened patina, it features a rhythmic grid of 56 small drawers, each fitted with brass label holders and pulls that speak to its professional origins. One label holder and one pull are missing, and several drawers, particularly in the lower section, are more resistant to movement, all consistent with age and use. The drawers were originally constructed without bases, as intended for card filing, a detail that remains visible today and can easily be adapted with paperboard or thin plywood if desired. Surface marks, stains, and wear add depth and authenticity, reinforcing its unmistakable antique character.
Today, this cabinet works beautifully in an office or studio for organizing small items, papers, or art supplies, or in a kitchen or pantry for spices, linens, or collectibles. The cabinet also works well in a curated retail environment, offering storage while grounding the space with its utilitarian elegance. Whether left as is or gently adapted, it brings a sense of order, craftsmanship, and quiet elegance, making it a distinctive and character rich addition to an interior.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
