This striking early 20th-century French table lamp combines luminous materials and elegant form. The turned and spun brass baluster base supports a domed opaline glass shade of generous scale, blown in celeste blue with a white interior. The shade is molded with vertical reeding and a gadrooned upper collar, resting on a brass gallery that accentuates its soft, diffused glow. The brass displays a bright, polished sheen with subtle age toning, highlighting the lamp’s refined craftsmanship. The opaline glass remains clean and intact. The underside of the base shows evidence of an awkward past restoration, finished with a cardboard cover, invisible when the lamp is standing but possibly worth replacement for improved presentation.
Opaline glass enjoyed wide popularity in France from the mid 19th century into the Belle Époque, prized for its milkiness and soft diffusion of light. This shade follows the profile of earlier oil lamps, translated for the age of electrification, with the white lining amplifying luminosity and the pale blue casing providing gentle color.
This lamp brings a touch of quiet glamour and a refined glow to a living room console, an entry table, or a library desk, where the blue opaline lends a soothing accent. Equally elegant in a bedroom or dressing room, it serves as a statement bedside piece or as the focal point of a graceful vignette.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
