Elegant French Louis XV Period Walnut Swivel Desk Chair, Mid-18th Century - 36½" x 27½"

A graceful French Louis XV period swivel desk armchair in walnut and leather, dating from the mid-18th century. The generously proportioned tub back is crowned by a gently arched walnut rail centred with carved flowers and foliage, while the padded arms terminate in elegantly moulded handgrips enriched with delicate foliate carving. Below, a shaped apron carved with floral motifs rests on slender cabriole legs. Upholstered in beautifully supple olive-brown leather, the chair is finished with traditional brass nailheads interspersed with a finely scalloped gimp trim and fitted with a loose circular cushion. It rotates a full 360 degrees on its original concealed mechanism. The walnut frame retains a warm, timeworn patina with minor surface wear, while the leather remains in excellent condition with only gentle creasing acquired through use. 

Developed during the reign of Louis XV around the mid-18th century, swivel desk chairs such as this became particularly associated with the workshops of Lyon and Paris, where they were created for scholars, notaries, and men of letters. Their ingenious rotating mechanism allowed the sitter to move freely around a writing desk without shifting the chair itself, while the embracing form provided remarkable comfort during long hours of reading, writing, or conversation.
