Elegant French Régence Walnut Desk with Marquetry Façade, Early 18th Century - 59"

A handsome French Régence-period walnut desk dating from the early 18th century. Its gently serpentine ends, shaped aprons, carved pilasters, and short splayed legs reflect the graceful transition from the architectural rigor of Louis XIV to the softer, more fluid lines of the Régence. Fine stringing elegantly outlines the drawers, doors, and panels throughout, while a striking radiating marquetry rosette forms the focal point of the façade, lending the desk a distinctive decorative presence. Three drawers and two cupboards provide generous storage, while the kneehole is characteristically narrow by modern standards. 

The cupboard doors retain their original working locks and keys, while the replacement drawer keys serve as pulls only and are not functional. The restored leather writing surface displays a beautifully timeworn patina, complementing the rich, mellow finish the walnut has acquired over three centuries. Original oxidized iron hardware enhances its authentic character, including one escutcheon charmingly fitted upside down, a delightful quirk that speaks to the desk's long history. The desk remains in very good antique condition, with honest wear including scattered scratches, minor edge nicks, and small losses to the feet consistent with age. 

Well suited to be floated in a study, library, or living room, this desk provides a beautiful stage for art books, antique maps, globes, or scientific instruments, while its generous drawers and cupboards discreetly house correspondence, important papers, and writing implements.
