An elegant coffee or end table dating from the 1950s, in the style of Maison Jansen or Maison Baguès, though bearing no maker's mark. The gilt brass base is finely cast in the form of stylized reeds, lending the piece a light and graceful silhouette. The removable black lacquered tray is hand-painted in gilt with scrolling floral motifs framing a Japanese-inspired figural scene, combining the glamour of mid-century design with the enduring appeal of chinoiserie decoration. The tray rests securely within shaped retaining clips and can be lifted away for serving.
The contrast of black lacquer and gilt decoration gives this piece a refined decorative presence, while the hand-painted tray reflects the craftsmanship and attention to detail associated with the finest decorative furnishings of the period. The tray displays expected surface wear, including light scratches and gentle rubbing to the decoration, while the brass base has developed an attractive mellow patina.
Equally at home in a classic or contemporary interior, it would look particularly striking alongside lacquer furniture, mirrored surfaces, and richly textured fabrics, evoking the timeless elegance of Coco Chanel's celebrated Rue Cambon apartment.
