A late 19th-century French wrought-iron garden bench, elegant and airy in profile. The serpentine back is composed of three lyre-shaped splats framed by scrolling volutes and rising to a softly undulating crest. Slender scrolled arms terminate in compact coils, while the three-panel sheet-iron seat is set within a forged frame over arched stretchers and attenuated legs. It retains an old deep green paint with a timeworn patina, scattered paint losses, and light oxidation from outdoor use. One back foot is missing but is scarcely noticeable and does not detract from the beauty or stability of the bench.

This model is unusual within the tradition of French wrought-iron garden furniture, which flourished in the second half of the 19th century for parks, orangeries, and café terraces. The lyre motif, rooted in Classical and Directoire taste, was repeatedly revived and here combines with lively scrollwork that anticipates Belle Époque and early Art Nouveau sinuosity. Hand-forged and riveted construction testifies to artisanal skill, uniting durability with the visual lightness of an openwork back.

Equally at home on a terrace or in a conservatory, the bench lends grace to an entry courtyard, beneath an arbor, or along a gravel path flanked by topiary.
