This elegant Louis XVI period commode sauteuse dates from the late 18th century and exemplifies the refined symmetry and delicate ornamentation associated with neoclassical French furniture. Crafted in warm-toned fruitwoods, the façade and sides are decorated with fine marquetry featuring ribbon motifs and geometric framing, creating a subtle yet sophisticated play of grain and pattern. The piece rests on tapered legs and includes three drawers with original brass pulls and decorative escutcheons. Although the locks are no longer functional, the commode retains its original key, now serving as a charming decorative feature.
There are small losses to the marquetry, consistent with the commode’s age, which do not detract from its overall visual appeal but instead highlight its authenticity and long history. The surface has developed a soft, natural patina that enhances the character of the wood and brings warmth to any interior.
With its compact proportions and elegant lines, this commode would make a graceful addition to a bedroom, entryway, or sitting room. Its understated neoclassical styling allows it to integrate seamlessly into both traditional and more contemporary settings, offering both functional storage and timeless decorative appeal.
