An intriguing contemporary square oil on canvas presenting a capriccio of classical ruins in a warm palette of umber, sienna, and sand set against a pale sky. The composition brings together a triumphal arch with Corinthian columns at left, terraced rock and grotto-like architecture at right, with distant aqueducts and mountains beyond. The foreground is animated with carved stone fragments and a Latin-inscribed tablet reading “Tempus edax rerum tuque invidiosa vetustas omnia destruitis” (“Time, the devourer of all things, and envious age, destroy everything”) a poetic reflection on the passage of time and the fragility of civilizations. Tiny silhouetted figures provide a sense of scale and narrative presence.
The artist demonstrates strong technical control, combining precise architectural drawing and perspective, with a sensitive handling of atmosphere and depth.
Unframed, the painting is in very good condition, with light rubbing to the edges and a few faint surface marks consistent with careful handling. Signed Roux and dated MMVII (2007).
This fantasia follows the Italianate tradition of the capriccio, a genre perfected by Panini, Piranesi, and later embraced in France by Hubert Robert. The theatrical stacking of arches, crumbling entablatures, and invented topographies evokes Grand Tour classicism and the Enlightenment taste for antiquarian reverie. The Latin cartouche underscores a memento mori theme, reflecting on the passage of time and the inevitable decay of great civilizations.
This interesting piece feels particularly at home in a study or library, where its imagined ruins bring a philosophical and dreamlike depth that invites contemplation.
