An extraordinary and deeply symbolic French folk-art armoire in solid walnut, traditionally attributed to Jean Molette (1819–1889), the self-taught Beaujolais folk sculptor, and dated 1875. Richly carved throughout, it displays an exceptional repertoire of religious and allegorical motifs rarely encountered on a single piece of furniture.
The imposing façade is crowned by a dentil cornice above a remarkable frieze depicting Moses holding the Tablets of the Law, flanked by the Four Evangelists, each rendered in deep relief. Below, the twin doors are adorned with vigorous vine scrolls laden with grape clusters, while the central stile features a standing figure carved in the round beneath the date and monogram “OG”. Numerous finely executed details enrich the composition, including boxwood appliqués, doves, stars, fleurs-de-lys, and a poignant motif of a horse upon a clock, symbolising the passage of time and the fleeting nature of life.
One dove has an old loss to a wing, a minor imperfection that does little to diminish the remarkable decorative impact of the piece. Retaining its original lock and working key, the armoire opens to reveal three fixed shelves. The walnut has developed a rich, warm patina over nearly 150 years, beautifully accentuating the depth and artistry of the carving. Minor surface marks, including a few shallow scratches and areas of light staining, are consistent with age and long use. The armoire retains its original demountable construction, with forged iron assembly brackets allowing it to be taken apart and reassembled as needed.
Rooted in the French folk-art tradition of the late 19th century, this armoire combines devotional imagery with rural symbolism. The sculptor’s assured craftsmanship is evident in the deeply carved relief panels and applied figures carved in the round, while the monogram “OG” likely identifies the original owner or household. Conceived as both furniture and a statement of faith, identity, and craftsmanship, it transforms a practical object into a remarkable work of narrative sculpture.
This exceptional armoire brings warmth, history, and remarkable craftsmanship to an interior. It is particularly well suited to a dining room for linens and service, where its rich carving can be appreciated beside a farmhouse table or more contemporary furnishings. In an entry hall, it serves as a dramatic focal point, immediately setting the tone for the home. Its deeply spiritual imagery also makes it especially compelling in a bedroom or study, where the devotional scenes and contemplative symbolism lend a sense of reflection, comfort, and quiet permanence.
