Exceptional Mid-20th Century Provençal Fish Stew Service

An exceptional and vibrant ceramic service for traditional fish stew and seafood courses, signed B.L. by the Louis Balme workshop in Le Brusc, a coastal village in Provence. Dating to the mid-20th century, this complete ensemble showcases the workshop’s mastery of form and glaze. The set includes two tureens, a large fish platter, one small ramekin, twelve dinner plates, and twelve soup bowls.

The earthenware is richly and thickly glazed in sun-baked ochre, animated with lively splashes of turquoise and coral, then framed by deep green rims. This complex, reactive glazing technique creates a shimmering, almost volcanic surface, unique to each piece and characteristic of skilled Provençal ceramic production. Sculptural elements heighten the artisanal charm: the tripod tureen rests on fish-form legs and is crowned with a fish finial, echoed by the boldly modeled fish-shaped platter and the second fish-form tureen. Together, the palette and textures evoke Mediterranean light, sea spray, and the convivial rituals of coastal dining. This service is documented in a 2017 anthology dedicated to the region’s iconic fish stew. Condition is very good, with minor glaze wear consistent with age and gentle use.

Ideal for a generous seafood gathering, the full service creates a striking table, with the fish platter serving as a theatrical centerpiece and the lidded tureens perfect for soups or fragrant stews. The bowls lend themselves to starters or citrus, while the plates bring warmth and color to everyday meals. When not in use, the sculptural tureens display beautifully on a sideboard, and the platter can be stood upright on a shelf or wall, animating a kitchen or garden room with sun-drenched color, tactile texture, and the unmistakable charm of Provençal coastal craftsmanship.
