It rises from a richly sculpted tripod base terminating in powerful hoof feet, with ram’s head sculptures, laurel garlands, acanthus leaves, and rosette details leading to a graceful shaft wrapped in scrolling floral and foliate relief, and an openwork crown above. The softly weathered surface reveals layers of grey-green paint, gilding, and traces of earlier finishes, while natural oxidation at the feet adds depth and authenticity.

This torchère reflects the 19th-century French fascination with classical antiquity and the refined neoclassical aesthetic. Cast and hand-finished by skilled foundrymen with parcel gilding and silvering, examples of this caliber were supplied to grand maisons during the Second Empire.
