A striking cast iron lion fountain spout dating from the late 19th century. Cast in high relief, the expressive lion's head features a flowing mane, wide eyes, and an open mouth designed to channel water into a basin or trough below. The surface has acquired a beautifully weathered patina, with areas of surface oxidation and pitting that highlight its age and outdoor history. Original iron hanging bar remain to the reverse for wall mounting.
Lion-head fountain spouts have been used since antiquity and remained a popular feature of garden and architectural design throughout the 19th century. Valued for their bold appearance and practical function, they brought a sense of grandeur to courtyards, terraces, and garden walls while serving as durable water features.
Whether mounted above a stone trough as a working fountain or displayed as a decorative wall plaque, this lion's head brings strength, character, and a timeless architectural quality to a space. It pairs beautifully with stone, brick, and plaster surfaces and makes a striking focal point in a garden, courtyard, conservatory, or entrance hall.
