Handmade in Venice in the 1950s, this Murano glass wall mirror presents a graceful cartouche silhouette framed by lavish glasswork in pale aquamarine and warm champagne tones. The serpentine border is edged with beaded cords of clear glass and ribbed ribbon elements, punctuated by applied rosette flowers at the corners and scrolls. A small crest surmounts the main plate and holds a smaller mirror etched with a basket of flowers, topped by a fan of leaf-form glass. The mirror plate is very clear with only light patina, and the piece is in excellent condition overall, with no distracting flaws visible.
Venetian mirrors have been prized since the 17th century for their technical refinement and romantic ornament, and this example follows that tradition while reflecting mid-20th-century taste. The applied flowers and beaded edging echo earlier rococo curves, while the floral basket evokes abundance and domestic elegance. Murano artisans formed the ribbed ribbons and rosettes by hand, then assembled them around the plate to create the characteristic dimensional frame that catches light and softens the reflection. This exquisite mirror suits an entry, powder room, or dressing area where it can bring a touch of shimmer without overpowering the space. In a contemporary interior, it adds texture and a graceful and whimsical Italian note.
