This petite French traveling dressing case from the Napoleon III period opens to reveal a complete beauty set arranged within a compartmented interior. The exterior is veneered in a dark precious wood with fine brass stringing and a floral inlay to the front, the lid centered by a blank brass cartouche intended for a monogram that was never applied. The lock operates with its tiny original key, and the hinged lid lifts to a deep blue velvet lining with a mirror, a lift-out tray, and fitted recesses. Inside are grooming tools with cream handles likely of bone or ivorine, together with clear glass bottles and jars capped by embossed silvered metal lids. Discreetly fitted under the lid is a slim document wallet, designed for keeping correspondence, notes, or small bills neatly stored.
The box presents in very good condition, the velvet gently timeworn, the mirror with light foxing, the veneer showing minor surface marks, and the metal elements oxidized in places, all consistent with age and careful use. Such dressing cases were essential companions for refined travel by carriage and the newly expanding rail in the Second Empire. Their design reflects the era’s taste for rich veneers and gleaming metal ornament revived from earlier Boulle-inspired traditions, translated here into precise brass inlay and crisp edging. A blank cartouche signaled ownership and status once engraved, while discreet document compartments and secure locks protected small valuables and private correspondence. The fitted implements accommodated the rituals of personal grooming, from manicure and sewing to scent and pomade, and the saturated velvet lining was a favored French finish of the time.
Displayed open on a vanity or marble-top commode, the case offers an evocative tableau of 19th-century travel and daily routine, while closed it reads as an elegant accent in a dressing room or guest suite. Because it is complete and detailed, with an array of charming period tools, it will no doubt appeal to collectors. Pair it with gilt brass candlesticks, a small portrait, or a carriage clock to echo its period character without overwhelming a contemporary interior.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
