About the artist:
Jean-Claude Novaro (1943-2014), French, is considered as one of the greatest glassmakers of the twentieth century. Novaro was born was born in Antibes, and died in Monaco at the age of 72. Experts compare his work to that of Daum, Gallé, Marinot and Lalique.
His vases are inspired by Art-Deco shapes and he revolutionized glassmaking techniques such as layering different materials (stones, oxides, powders) onto molten glass to create different textures and reflections. In the 1990s, he invented a technique to make glass glow in the dark. Novaro’s work has been exhibited at the Corning Museum of Glass, New-York, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, Cathédrale de Rouen and many more. Famed French musician Johnny Hallyday was a close friend and supporter of Novaro’s work.
He is one of the few glassmakers to blow pieces weighing over ten kilograms and holds a Guinness World Record for the largest glass coup ever made.
